I’m Bettina Thomsen, a licensed clinical social worker with a Master’s Degree from Columbia University School of Social Work. I work with individuals, children and families experiencing major life transitions, including separation and divorce.
I’ve been practicing in New York City for 20 years. I have spent most of my career working with high conflict divorce and specialize in family reunification, parent coordination and parenting education.
My Approach:
Our sessions are a safe space for you to communicate your needs, desires, and boundaries. I meet people at a time in their lives when they are at their most vulnerable, so I prioritize making folks feel comfortable. I’m here to support and guide you, not judge you.
When we work together individually, I aim to help you to clarify your goals and make sense of your thoughts, behaviors and emotions that might be getting in the way of you reaching them.
As a family therapist, I help families navigate difficult dynamics. It can be frustrating and upsetting when your family isn’t getting along, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. Therapy can help your family process emotions and resolve conflict in a healthy, constructive way. Most importantly, I recognize that each family is unique. You know your family best, and while I can offer feedback and suggestions based on my professional experience, my first job is listening. I want all members of your family to feel heard and respected.
Whether we consciously recognize it or not, we often get stuck in unhelpful patterns of interacting with each other. Therapy provides a space to break down those patterns and learn new ways of connecting to find more peace and harmony.
